The Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ) is a first class zoological research institute established nearly 50 years ago. Today, it is one of twenty biological institutes in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and was honored to have obtained support from the “Renovation 2020 pick over” —the only CAS life sciences institute in the western China to receive such accolades. To date, in excess of 400 staff are working at the institute with more than 270 post graduate students studying across the various labs.

KIZ focuses on conducting cutting-edge research across 32 different scientific research groups headed by principal investigators with international experience. Research focuses around three key scientific fields: evolutionary genetics and reproduction; utilization of biodiversity resources & conservation biology; and animal models & human disease mechanisms. Housed within KIZ are the State Key Laboratory of Genetic Resources and Evolution, the Key Laboratory of Animal Models and Human Disease Mechanisms, another 3 provincial laboratories, the Kunming Primate Research Center, the State Biological Industrialization Base – Experimental Animal Center, and the Kunming Biodiversity Center for Large Scale Facilities. At the moment, the CAS-Yunnan Government Laboratory of Biodiversity in Southwest China is under construction.

Located in southern Yunnan, KIZ is strategically located in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, alongside areas of Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, India, and Myanmar. Yunnan is home to numerous ethnic minorities and a rich culture boasts a complex geographical environment and unique vertical three-dimensional climate that provides abundant and diversified biological resources, favorable ecological environment, and beautiful natural scenery. Kunming, the provincial capital, borders Dianchi Lake in the south, and is surrounded by the mountains on the other three other, giving the city a comfortable spring-like climate year round. Kunming is also a quickly growing and modernizing city, slating to become China’s gateway to Southeast Asia and its link to the ASEAN trade network. In 2012, the Kunming Changshui International Airport opened as one of the four largest international airports in China.

To further the institute’s scientific research development KIZ will begin open recruitment for 20 positions, available to highly qualified applicants from China and abroad.
