Research Areas

Integration of biodiversity assessment, systematic biology, and conservation aquaculture, with a focus on freshwater fish and aquatic organisms in China's Eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia. Research involves resource surveys to evaluate the status of economically, ecologically, and conservationally important species, assessment of anthropogenic impacts, and formulation of evidence-based conservation strategies. Integrative taxonomy, molecular systematics, and phylogeography are employed to discover cryptic species, elucidate the roles of major geological events and ecological factors in speciation, and reveal diversity patterns shaped by climate change. Building on successful captive breeding of rare and endangered fish in Yunnan, efforts also include introduction, artificial propagation, and stock enhancement of valuable, endemic, and threatened species from Southeast Asia, as well as selective breeding and development of new varieties for sustainable utilization.
