2021-08-03

The Germplasm Bank of Wildlife Species provides the first major scientific and technological infrastructure in the field of life science and constitutes the core facility for the preservation of strategic biological resources in China. The Germplasm Bank of Wildlife Species was jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Yunnan Province. Animal Germplasm Bank was built and is operated by Kunming Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and is mainly responsible for the collection, preservation and management of important animal germplasm resources in China and its surrounding areas. In addition, it serves animal scientific research and the development of life science industry. Now in existence for more than 20 years, the Animal Germplasm Bank has a collection of more than 200,000 animal tissues and nucleic acid and cell specimens from more than 11,000 species. Storage capacity for two million samples and an "animal germplasm resources information management system" with independent intellectual property rights have been implemented. The first one million samples have been subjected to an automatic storage procedure in Southwest China using industry-leading ultra-low temperature automatic picking technology to ensure the quality and safety of samples. The Animal Germplasm Bank provides standardized, information and automatic management services for large-scale projects such as The Dog 10K Genomes Consortium and the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research Program (STEP).
