Founded in 1959, with the efforts of several generations’ scientists, the Zoological Specimens Bank, Kunming Institute of Zoology (CAS), and its affiliated Kunming Historical Museum of Zoology have developed into the top institutions in southwestern China.
The Zoological Specimens Bank collects 640,000 specimens include fish, amphibians, birds, mammals and insects, which cover almost every ecological form of the animals kingdom-Yunnan, and the neighboring provinces, with the highlights of lots of endangered species like golden monkey(rhinopithecus roxellanae), panda, black-necked crane(grus nigricollis), sclater's monal pheasant(lophophorus sclateri), Chinese sturgeon(acipenser sinensis) and teinopalpus aureus,etc.
