Prof. Yong-Bin Chen, Principle Investigator, Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Chen’s research is mainly focusing on characterizing molecular mechanisms of signaling pathways which are important for tumor and stem cells, such as Hedgehog (Hh) and Hippo (Hpo) signaling pathways. His lab is also establishing tumor models in the non-human primate animals including tree shrew and monkey, developing lead compounds screening platforms for serial tumors and adult neural stem cells which are isolated from human, monkey, tree shrew and mouse hippocampal dentate gyrus. Dr. Chen’s research results have been published in high profile journals, such as Genes & Development, Developmental Cell, PLoS Biology, PNAS, Cell Research, etc.

Research Fields and Progress in 2013

The major interest of our lab is inductive signals involved in regulating tumor and stem cells. We use Drosophila, chicken, mouse, monkey and tree shrew as model systems to study the fundamental and prevalent mechanisms that control tumor and stem cells self-renew, proliferation, differentiation and so on. We are also establishing tumor models in the non-human primate animals including monkey and tree shrew, and screening leading compounds which could inhibit tumor cell proliferation or improve neural stem cells pluripotency. Dr. Chen was invited to write a review about Hh signaling pathway for Cell Research. In this review, he focuses on the pivotal roles that phosphorylation plays in Hh signaling pathway, and compares the conserved and different functional mechanisms between Drosophila and mammalian systems.

Dr. Chen’s lab is also trying to uncover the evolutionary molecular mechanisms for plateau animal adaption using cell-based assays under hypoxia, intensive UV and cold environments, respectively.
