An antithrombotic molecule binding both platelet membrane receptor and eicosanoids was characterized in the salivary gland of horse fly Tabanus Yao

The saliva gland of the horse fly Tabanus Yao contains plenty of bioactive molecules with antithrombotic effects. In recent years, the research team led by Prof. Lai Ren from Kunming institute of zoology, CAS. has characterized a number of antithrombotic molecules in the saliva gland of horse fly Tabanus Yao. Recently, based on the previous work and collaborating with Prof. John’s research team of NIH, this team found the previously characterized salivary protein- tablysin 15 has a unique CAP domain, which can both bind the platelet membrane receptor aIIbb3 and eicosanoids. The eicodanoid with the inflammatory and vasoconstrictive activities  including 4 types of molecules: thromboxane, leukotrienes, prostacyclin and prostaglandin. The eicodanoid is an important factor leading to angiosclerosis and thrombosis. The research work shows that this bifunctional protein can have the antithrombotic effect through inhibiting the platelet activity and scavenging the eicodanoids. The bifunctional domain which can both bind the platelet membrane receptor and the eicodanoids provides a leading template for developing high effective antithrombotic drugs. This work has been published on the world famous journal JBC (Structure of a protein having inhibitory disintegrin and leukotriene scavenging functions contained in a single domain.
