The Indo-Burman Hotspot encompasses a broad array of diversified and unique environments, which are home to some of the world’s most abundant species biodiversity. Showcasing and preserving specimens of this region, the Kunming Natural History Museum of Zoology is currently the largest facility devoted to natural history in China, housing substantial collections that include 690,000+ specimens representing a broad-cross section of the ecological and environmental zones of Yunnan, its neighboring provinces, and Southeast Asia.

Currently, the Museum’s collections include 200,000+ fish specimens, 40,000 amphibian and reptile specimens, 20,000+ bird specimens, 20,000 mammal specimens and nearly 410,000 insect specimens. Most of these specimens are intended for scientific research, being preserved primarily as dry stripped specimens, skeletal specimens and skin specimens.

Alongside the scientific specimens, the Museum boasts roughly 10,000 specimens intended for public outreach on display in the four-story exhibition hall, which opened in 2006 as a joint venture between the Chinese Academy of Sciences Innovation Program and the Yunnan Provincial Government. The Exhibition Hall currently includes traditional exhibits of posed animals, as well as environmental dioramas, as well as several state of the art interactive exhibits and a movie theater showing educational films on the importance of conservation and biodiversity.

Each year, the Museum hosts several rotating exhibits on its second floor, with recent projects including themed-public exhibitions educating the public on conservation, biodiversity, poaching, scientific research and education, as well as public science days and tours for primary and second school children.
