The presentation by Prof. Richard Durbin’s from The Wellcome Trust Sang Invited by Prof. Wen WANG, Deputy director of Academic Committee of State Key Laboratory of Genetic Resources and Evolution, Prof. Richard Durbin (The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, UK) visited Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ), CAS in Aug. 28, 2012.
Richard Durbin is joint Head of Human Genetics at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and leader of the Genome Informatics group. He has made multiple theoretical and algorithmic contributions to biological sequence analysis, and contributed to the human genome project and development of the Pfam, TreeFam and WormBase data resources.  He is currently co-leading the 1000 Genomes Project to produce a deep catalogue of human genetic variation by large scale sequencing, and the UK10K collaboration to extend sequence based genetics to samples with clinically relevant phenotypes, and has renewed interests in genome assembly methods.
During this visiting, Prof. Durbin gave a wonderful prensentation titled as “Human genetic variation: from population sequencing to cellular function” at lecture hall (324) of KIZ in the morning of Aug. 28, 2012. He introduced the advances of 1000 genome project and UK10K collaboration and some related interesting insights. Totally, about 100 persons including scientists and postgraduates listened to this presentation. After presentation, scientists and postgraduates discussed many instersting questions about hunman genetic variation and related fields with Prof. Durbin. This is really an insigtful presentation, which contributed greatly for KIZ scientists and postgraduates to understanding the forefront progress of human genetics.
