2026-01-06

December 31, 2025 — The tenth edition of the "Science Yunnan" themed train, jointly organized by the Kunming Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Yunnan Association for Science and Technology, debuted today on Kunming Metro Lines 1 and 2.

This public science exhibition, themed "Board the Ark of Life, Cherish Our Planetary Community," transforms the subway into a mobile museum, creating a miniature yet rich world of animals. The six carriages are dedicated to distinct themes: Life Evolution, Animal Family Tree, Yunnan's Wildlife, Domesticated Animals, Scientific Discoveries, and Science Education.

The exhibition takes passengers on a journey from the origin of life and the Cambrian explosion, exploring the eternal themes of adaptation and change. It showcases the kinship in nature through displays ranging from cnidarians to vertebrates, highlights the unique biodiversity of Yunnan as a global hotspot, traces the origins of domesticated animals alongside the history of human-animal coexistence, and shares significant scientific discoveries from the Kunming Institute of Zoology, conveying the beauty of nature and the spirit of scientific inquiry.

With vivid animal imagery and clear thematic designs, the carriages present a cohesive and vibrant perspective on life, attracting passengers' attention and creating an engaging educational space. From the Black Snub-nosed Monkey to the Clouded leopard, from coral reefs to tropical rainforests, the "Science Yunnan" train aims to raise public awareness about wildlife conservation and the protection of endangered species through its rich content.

This science outreach initiative also features collaborations with musicians, integrating related music into the experience. By turning the daily commute into an encounter with the wonder of life, the project demonstrates how public transit can extend beyond transportation to become a space for cultural and educational services, putting the concept of "inclusive science outreach" into practice to enhance public scientific literacy. We invite all citizens and visitors to experience this special train and journey together toward a future of greater understanding, respect, and appreciation for life.
