On April 4th 2004, Dr. Wang Wen and his coworkers in the CAS-Max-Planck Junior Scientist Group of Evolutionary Genomics reported the mechanism of gene split at the first time based on the study of a new gene family named ‘monkey-king (mkg)’. This work has important significance in understanding the mechanism of new gene origination, and thus was published in Nature Genetics. Once published, the research immediately captured the attention of both domestic and international scientists. In response to the paper, an article titled ‘Genes Constantly Evolve’ was published in the American magazine The Scientist and highlighted how the research findings on the mkg gene family have made an important emendation on the current theory of gene duplications.
