New Species of Schistura “Physoschistura Yunnaniloides” Recorded
Print
2011-10-29

The research team headed by Prof. YANG Junxing from the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (KIZ) detected a new species of Schistura in California Academy of Sciences.

Given the similarity with Yunnanilus in terms of color patter and with Physoschistura in body shape, the new species was named as Physoschistura yunnaniloides.

The new species was collected by American ichthyologists Carl Ferraris and David Catania in Kalemyo, Myanmar in 1996 and was studied bySwiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat and Dr. Dave Neely from California Academy of Sciences.

The new species is distinguished from all other species of Schistura by a unique color pattern of 3-9 orange bars on the side of the body, with the 1st bar immediately behind the head and the 2nd bar near the dorsal-fin origin and widely separated so that most of the nape and the anterior side of the body are uniformly brown. The species reaches only 41 mm SL and inhabits shallow gravel and rubble riffles in small streams. The research results have recently been published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters(22: 169-178).
