ZHANG Zhigang Ph.D. His major research interests are animal gut microbiomes and animal adaptive evolution. Dr. ZHANG was recipient of Health Science and Technology Achievement Award in Yunnan Province (the second prize, 2013 and the first prize, 2017). He was also recipient of Reserve talents of young and middle-aged academic technology leaders in Yunnan Province. He is the major principal of Key deployment project of Chinese Academy of Sciences “Functional characteristics and regulation of gut microbiomes in domesticated animals”; He is also the principal of National Natural Science Foundation of China “Variation of rumen microbiome in yak and its adaptation to high-altitude”.

        Research Interest

Professor Zhang's research programme focuses on providing insight into the role of gut microbiome in both health and disease in human & animals.

He unravels the (co-)evolution of animals and their gut microbiomes under both artificial selection and natural selection using multi-omics approaches such as (meta)genomics, (meta)transcriptomics, metabolomics and (meta)proteomics as well as systems biology. Using non-human primate models, he attempts to reveal the role of gut microbiome in the regulation of neurodegenerative disorder.
