The Kunming Biological Diversity Regional Center of Instruments is joint entity set up by Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ), Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) and Xishuangbanna Tropical Garden (XTBG), and currently the largest center of life sciences research equipment in southwestern China. The Centre is primarily divided into five sectors of experimental and data analysis platforms: 1) the Experimental Platform for Characteristic Gene Protein Resource and Gene Function Exploration; 2) the Experimental Platform for Natural Drug screening and Animal Models of Human Disease; 3) the Experimental Platform for Ecological Processes and Applied Ecology Research; 4) the Integrated Platform for Biodiversity Information Analysis; and 5) DNA barcoding technology platform.
The research platforms are continually being upgraded and expanded to support the growth and complexity of life science research being undertaken in southwestern China. As of 2013, the Center included 99 sets of facilities, roughly valued 130 million Chinese Yuan. A few select instruments include a 3730xl DNA Analyzer, Ion Torrent Sequencers, Hiseq 2500 Sequencing System, Roche/454 Genome Sequencer FLX System, PacBio RS Single-Molecule Real-Time Sequencing System, QuantStudio 12K Flex Realtime PCR System, Affymetrix Gene Chip Scanner, Flow Cytometer, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope, and High Performance Computing Linux-Cluster.
A full listing of all equipment can be viewed on the Regional Center’s homepage: http://kmbioc.kjtj.cas.cn/. Researchers working at any of the parent institutions (KIZ, KIB, XTBG) or related CAS or provincial institutes can schedule facility usage online at: http://caslims.cas.cn/apparatus_seam/login.seam.
