Genetic Diversity and Origin of Domestic Animals
Prof. Ya-Ping Zhang’s group has systematically studied the origin and genetic diversity of major domestic animals, including pig, cattle, yak, dog, sheep, goat, chicken, goose, rabbit, horse, donkey and camel. By using both mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA sequences, they demonstrated an East Asian origin of domestic dogs around 15,000 years ago, which was published in Science as a cover pap... more
Evolution of modern human populations in East Asia
Using genetic markers, the research group led by Prof Bing Su systematically studied the extensive populations of East Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and North Asia as well as multiple ethnic populations from China. They demonstrated that modern humans in East Asia share a recent common ancestor in Africa and, therefore, provided further support for the “Out of Africa” hypothesis of the o... more
Origination and Evolution of New Genes
On April 4th 2004, Dr. Wang Wen and his coworkers in the CAS-Max-Planck Junior Scientist Group of Evolutionary Genomics reported the mechanism of gene split at the first time based on the study of a new gene family named ‘monkey-king (mkg)’. This work has important significance in understanding the mechanism of new gene origination, and thus was published in Nature Genetics. Once published, t... more
The mechanisms and therapeutics underlying stress induced disorders
Stress causes or aggravates 90% diseases, particularly mental disorder and recognition disorder. Disasters such as wars and earthquakes can induce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our investigation demonstrates that the central serotonin (5-HT) deficit increases the susceptibility of PTSD. The activation of the TRPV1 receptor in hippocampus plays an anti-stress role in both synaptic plast... more
